Introduction
Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Bed (UASB) uses anaerobic process to degrade organics in wastewater and generate methane and carbon dioxide. Wastewater flows upwards through a blanket of granular sludge which suspends in the tank and the pollutants are digested by the anaerobic microorganisms. In this technology, a gas-liquid-solid separator is required to collect the biogas, discharge the treated wastewater and settle the granular sludge.
UASB is a high effective, energy saving and less construction area technology. It can be utilized in high/low concentration and high suspended solid wastewater. The major advantages are:
- High loading and relative small reactor, the COD loading can be more than 5 kg.COD/m3.d.
- High land use efficiency, the efficiency is 10 times than conventional activated sludge and the value reaches 50 kg.COD/m2.d.
- Low sludge generation, the rate is less than 0.1kg.SS/kg.COD.
- Low energy consumption, aeration is not required.
- Wide range of wastewater concentration.
- High capability in changes of water quality and loading.
